Dental Malpractice Suits - Dentist Malpractice

Whenever a lot of people think about malpractice suits, they tend to not think about dental malpractice suits.  While these suits are in their own category, just like any other medical professional, dentists are also liable for improper treatment or services.

The frequency of the number of claims in dental malpractice are pretty steady, even though they are smaller than those in the medical field.  Some of the many injuries that can be caused by improper dental treatment include: jaw injuries, damage to the nerves in your lips or tongue, injuries related to anesthesia and even death.  For instance, if your dentist fails to detect the fact that you have oral cancer, or other such oral diseases, then he is liable.  Your dentist also has the responsibility of making sure that you do not have any prior medical conditions that may require special treatment before giving you anesthesia.  Of course, the most obvious dental malpractice cases are those wherein a patient dies from a dental procedure.  Some other reasons for a person to be able to file a dental malpractice suit include:
1.Complications from oral surgery that lead to permanent nerve damage.
2.A root canal that results in permanent numbness.
3.An injury resulting from your dentist accidentally removing a good tooth.

The law holds dentists to a certain standard of care whenever they are rendering services to their patients.  Some real cases of dental malpractice include:
1.One person received a $24,000 settlement when they developed periodontal abscess from a defective bridge that was not properly treated.
2.One woman had a procedure done but it was done with improper contoured crowns and bridges, thus resulting in negligence and a $47,500 settlement.
3.Another patient had their tongue become permanently numb after a routine wisdom tooth extraction.  This resulted in a $140 settlement.
4.One young man sustained nerve injury as a result of a dental procedure received a $54,000 settlement.
5.Another woman had a painfully numb lip and chin after a routine dental treatment.  She received a $100 settlement.

While it unclear how many cases of dental malpractice are filed each year in the United States, some statistics do state that the numbers are rising.  Plus there are also numerous people who have suffered due to improper dental procedures and negligence and yet have not gone on to report these things.  This may be because they are not aware that they can file a dental malpractice suit.

If you feel that you have experienced an injury at the hands of your dentist, then you may wish to look for an attorney who is familiar with dental malpractice lawsuits and who can provide you with the help and the advise that you need.  This may make a difference in your life or the life of one of your family members.  For this reason, it is only right to get the justice that you deserve when you are injured through careless dental treatments or even negligence on the part of your dentist.
